CAMDEN – The Camden Lions Club along with the Camden Rockport Middle School announced the winners of its annual Peace Poster Contest with a dinner and ceremony at the Lions Club at 10 Lions Lane on January 15.

The winner was Cadence Ankers with Charlotte Delehey and Lea Zwecker as runners up. Each picked up a certificate and $100 cash.

The contest focuses on the sixth grade and according to sixth grade history teacher Jim Morse, it’s nice to give peace a chance.

“We study a lot of wars,” he said. “We study the War of 1812, the Spanish American War, the Civil War and World War II, so I think this is a great counterpoint, the Peace Poster Contest. Every year the theme changes a little bit. This year it was kindness matters.”

The contest has been going on for 30 years and was initiated by Jerry Stone when he was teaching at the middle school.

“We probably had 60 kids try it,” said Morse. “You can’t use words, you can’t use symbols and you can’t use 3D and those are just three of a lot of rules. You have to get your message across through images.”

The complete rules are as follows:

*Only a Lions club can sponsor the contest in a local school or organized, sponsored youth group, such as YMCA programs, Boys & Girls Clubs, Scouts, etc.  Lioness clubs may work through their sponsoring Lions club.  The contest cannot be held in youth groups that a Lions club sponsors, such as a Leo club or Scout unit.  However, individual members of those groups (such as Leos or Scouts) may participate if the contest is held at their school or other organized youth group.

*Contest is open to students who will be 11, 12, or 13 years of age on November 15, 2018.  Eligible birth dates are November 16, 2004 through November 15, 2007.
*The contest theme is "Kindness Matters."

*Only one entry per student per year, and each entry must be the work of only one student.
*All artwork must be the individual student's original creation.  Duplications are not accepted.
