Camden Fire Department bids farewell to longtime firefighter Tom Quantrelle
CAMDEN — Family, friends and fellow firefighters gathered Saturday morning, June 7, at the First Congregational Church in Camden to honor Thomas Macneille Quantrelle, who died last winter at age 72.
Tom Quantrelle, of Camden, had volunteered at the Camden Fire Dept. for more than half of his life.
“With respect and sorrow we honor the life and legacy of Tom Q, who served our community for 40 years as a member of the Camden Fire Department," said Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley. "His dedication and service exemplified what it means to be a Firefighter. His memory will live on in everyone he touched, and all the Firefighters he served with. We are grateful for his service to our community.”
Before the 9 a.m. memorial service, members of the Camden Fire Dept. lined the walkway to the entrance of the church, an honor guard standing at attention in honor and remembrance of their fellow member of Atlantic Engine Company No. 2.
During the service inside the church, Camden Fire Dept. member Ed Boylan lead the Last Alarm Ceremony, with Camden firefighter Jack Orestis sounding the Ringing of the Bell three times, a traditional tribute to a firefighter.
"Throughout most of history, the lives of firefighters have been closely associated with the ringing of a bell.
"As they began their hours of duty, it was the bell that started it off. Through the day and night, each alarm was sounded by a bell that called them to fight fire and to place their lives in jeopardy for the good of their fellow man.
"And when the fire was out, and the alarm had come to an end, the bell rang three times to signal the end.
"And now our Brother Tom has completed his task, his duties well done, and the bell rings three times in memory of, and, in tribute to, His life and service."
Tom Quantrelle died December 30, 2024 after a year-long battle with cancer.
"He was a loving fiance, father, grandfather and friend to all of those who were lucky to cross paths with him," his obituary read.
"Tom was known for striking up a conversation with anyone who would let him. He was extremely fun-loving, kind, charming and outgoing. These qualities were the bedrock for his relationship with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and only hope that his spirit will live on through everyone he knew and all the lives he touched."
