BELFAST — Belfast Senior College’s fall semester, welcoming participants ages 50 and older, begins September 21 with classes offered in multiple Belfast locations and on Zoom. Seven classes begin in September while six begin in October. September classes include drawing, photography, poetry, learning French and more. October offerings include four one-session classes in addition to a four-session papercutting class, and a seven-week course on German resistance to Hitler.

“The diversity of topics offers something for everyone,” said Senior College Curriculum Committee Chair Karen Gleeson, in a news release. “Now that classes are available in downtown Belfast and on Zoom, Senior College invites Belfast area community members to celebrate autumn with a chance to delve into new topics, to learn more about a familiar topic, or to gain new skills and hobbies. Given the widespread evidence of the benefits of learning in our later years, we encourage all who are 50 and older to take advantage of these opportunities to explore new subjects and ideas.”

Four classes begin on September 21. These include “Tennessee Williams and His Plays,” offered at 1:00 p.m. with three classes offered at 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays: “New Direction in Drawing” at Waterfall Arts, “Photography’s a SNAP” at Social Capital, and “Still An Unexpected Poet” at St. Margaret’s Church.

Other September classes include “So Ya Wanna Sing?” at First Church on Fridays, 9:30 a.m.; “Back to Charles Dickens” at Social Capital, 9:30 a.m., and Advanced French, Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. Finally, “Dedicated to Odin: Norse Mythology and Religion” will be offered via Zoom Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m.

For those who find that a one-afternoon class session fits their schedules, four October classes offer this option. Belfast Museum director Megan Pinette offers a one-afternoon course on “Belfast’s Changing Industrial Waterfront, 1980-1990” at the Belfast Free Library, Monday, Oct. 2, 1 p.m. Poet Bob Johansen teaches “Poems of Insight and Awakening” at Penobscot Shores in Belfast on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1 p.m. Erica Nadelhaft presents her one-day “Antisemitism Past and Present” at the Belfast Free Library on Monday, Oct. 23, 1 p.m., and Natalie Angela offers a one-session course on “Nutritional Healing Basics” at the library on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m.

Artist Leslie Miller leads a four-session “Paper Cutting Exploration” course at Social Capital, 28 Spring Street in Belfast on Monday Oct. 16, 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday Oct. 23, 9:30 a.m. and Monday, Oct. 30, 9:30 a.m. Local historian Sandy Garson leads a seven-week Zoom course on “The Hidden Truth of German Resistance to Hitler” every Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., beginning Oct. 4, and ending Senior College’s fall semester on Nov. 15.
