Belfast native Martha Hills returns with husband for homecoming concert
Martha Hills, a Belfast native, and her husband, Donald DePoy, will perform a free family friendly concert showcasing mellow folk, spirited bluegrass, and sultry swing.
"Me & Martha" takes place Friday, Aug. 15, from 6:30 - 8 p.m., at Belfast Free Library, Abbott Room, 106 High Street, Belfast, Maine. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Martha and Don first met in Belfast in 2000. They started Get Away From It All, a sailboat charter business from Belfast City landing. For eight years they shared their love of sailing with tourist from all over the world. Their musical partnership began in 2003, the time it took Martha to learn to play bass and sing.
"The duo artfully weaves together New England folk melodies, maritime shanties, and regional Maine compositions with Don's authentic Shenandoah Valley Appalachian heritage, creating a distinctive sound that celebrates America's rich rural musical tapestry," said DePoy.
Their dedication to musical excellence has earned significant recognition, including Don's recent nomination for the prestigious 2025 International Bluegrass Music Association Distinguished Achievement Award. In the past 14 years as full-time touring musicians Me & Martha have performed over 3,800 concerts and workshops. To fulfill their dream of making live music accessible to everyone, they created the Shenandoah Music Trail, a Virginia based nonprofit. The Music Trail just received a $7500 matching grant from the Virginia Arts Commission to bring music to Virginia’s poorest senior residents.
The duo's accolades include four consecutive years as Virginia Living Magazine’s Top Wedding Band. They are members of America's Old-Time Country and Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and appear on traditional artist rosters for Young Audiences of Virginia and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
Their television series, Mountain Music, continues to reach global audiences through reruns. The program showcases 162 musicians performing 633 songs and has been preserved in both the Folk Archive Collection at The Library of Congress and the Virginia Folk Life Archives, considered the single most significant collection since Alan Lomax in the 1940s, according to DePoy.
As masters of their craft, Don brings over 66 years of stage experience and an extensive repertoire of more than 1,500 songs. Together, Me & Martha draw from a collection of 750 songs.
Their performances blend vocals, intricate harmonies, instrumental skills, and storytelling.
