Appleton Village School addresses remote instruction

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 5:00pm

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

We understand the impact that stopping classroom instruction has on families. We are working together as a staff to develop the best plan we can to support our families. As this is unchartered territory for all of us, plans will continue to develop. We are building the plane as we fly. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time if there is anything we have not addressed or have not thought of.

Our building will be open for adults to pick up packets, books, resources, personal belongings and 6th-8th laptops on Wednesday & Thursday of this week from 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM. All items for grades K-8 will be set up in the gym, with a table designated for each grade. For students in grades 6-8, please remove personal items from their lockers. There are free books available to families, as well. If anything is needed from a child’s classroom, please contact the child’s teacher or anyone in the building at that time to assist you.

We ask you to practice social distancing when you enter the building. Please come in without children and get what you need and leave promptly. All conversation with staff needs to be conducted via the phone or email.

Each teacher will send out resources, logins to websites, suggestions, and ideas. This will look a little different from class to class. Please look for an email from your child’s teacher in the upcoming days. All teachers will be available via email and will answer questions. You should receive two emails a week from teachers with suggested activities.

We understand that each family has individual needs and resources. The resources are to keep the mind stimulated and reinforce skills. For most classes, teachers will pick up where they left off when we return back to regular school. However, we encourage students to read, read, read as well as practice math facts.

Please regularly check your email as classroom teachers will be sending out information. The AVS Facebook page will also be updated. We also plan to email the Wildcat News every two weeks.

As it is our intent to make sure we stay well connected during these turbulent times, we will be reaching out to families via phone to check in. If you wish to not receive phone calls of this nature, please let us know during the time of the initial call. We will start these calls next week.

    If you need assistance with:
Tech. issues, contact Than Porter, Nathaniel.Porter@fivetowns.net
Social/emotional needs, contact Gary Bernardo, Gary.Bernardo@fivetowns.net
Health concerns, contact Sandy Fuller, sandy.fuller@fivetowns.net
For any other questions, contact Susan Stilwell, Susan.stilwell@fivetowns.net

Again, we understand the impact that school closure has on families. We are here to support each other through these times as best as we can. We are in this together. Please be well and take care.

    Sincerely,
    Susan Stilwell
