WARREN — Alfred L. Butler, 90, died Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Knox Center in Rockland following an extended period of declining health.

Born in Thomaston, August 26, 1928, he was the son of Maynard Brazier and Bertha Callahan. He was later adopted by Wilmont and Ada Watts Butler.

Alfred grew up in Rockland where he attended local schools and was a 1947 graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Japan and Korea until being honorably discharged in 1950.

He was first married to Lucille Ingerson and had four children. He later married Alice Libbey with whom he had four children. Alice died in 1990. In 1992, he married Frances L. Gray Brown.

Throughout his career Alfred worked as an Installation Technician with Superior Oil Company, which later became Kalloch Fuel, and for several years until his retirement, with Maritime Energy. Even after his formal retirement, unable to sit around, Alfred drove for Coastal Trans where he enjoyed interacting and visiting with his riders.

Always active in his community, Alfred volunteered many years with the Thomaston 4th of July activities. He was a long-time member of the Orient Lodge of Masons, #15 in Thomaston, the Mid Coast Shrine Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had been an active member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Rockland and St. John Baptist Episcopal Church in Thomaston.

Alfred enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, snowmobiling, canoeing and fishing.  He was always willing to help friends and family in any way he could.

Other than his parents, Alfred was pre-deceased by his second wife Alice Libbey Butler; his brothers Alfred Dennison, Richard Dennison and Donald Dennison; his sisters Sarah Benner, Catherine Widdecombe, Ada Toto, Gladys Dennison and Velma Hastings and one infant child Pamela Libbey.

He is survived by his wife Frances Butler and her sons Robert Brown and Roswell Brown; 11 children Donna Libbey and her husband Chris Johnson of Warren, Malcolm Libbey and his wife Brenda of Texas, Richard Libbey and his wife Kathy of Thomaston, Wayne Butler and his wife Gina of Washington, Stephen Butler of Ohio, Deb Butler of Florida, Joyce Butler of Waldoboro, Todd Butler and his wife Becky of South Thomaston, Tina Robinson and her husband Charles of Thomaston, Ward Butler and his wife Margaret of Bristol,VT, Andrea Watmough and her husband Fred of Warren; 34 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 6 p.m. by the officers and members of the Orient Lodge of Masons #15.  

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 8, at Village Cemetery, Erin Street, Thomaston.
