BELFAST — The investigation of the fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Liberty March 12 remains ongoing, according to Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton.

Alden Andrews, 35, of Liberty, was struck by what was later identified as tractor-trailer while walking along Route 220 around 2:20 a.m. when the hit-and-run occurred. Andrews was discovered by another motorist who notified police a short time later.

Andrews was transported to Waldo County General Hospital before being taken by LifeFlight of Maine to Northern Lights Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on March 14, according to Trafton.

The alleged driver of the tractor-trailer, Andrew Dinsmore, 47, of Washington, was discovered later on the same day Andrews was struck, according to a press release from WSO Lieutenant Matt Curtis released March 12. At the time of the crash, Dinsmore was allegedly operating a 2000 Peterbilt tri-axle tractor hauling a tandem axle trailer in the area at the time of the incident and it was later determined that the vehicle in question was the vehicle that struck Andrews, Curtis wrote in a news release.

Prior to the alleged driver being located, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office appealed to the public for any information regarding the incident.

As of March 17, the investigation remains ongoing.
