2026 Lamppost Sponsorship Campaign begins
We’re pleased to announce that the 2026 Lamppost Sponsorship Campaign is now launched! We invite you to help us make Camden beautiful, and now is your chance to participate.
Most people know that flower baskets have been hung on our downtown lampposts for as long as anyone remembers, but do you know the whole story? Here’s what really happened: In 1925, Edward Bok, husband of Mary Louise Curtis Bok, returned to Camden from a trip to Europe. While he was there, he noticed flower baskets hanging from street lamps in many towns and was very impressed with the beauty they created at or above eye level. He and his wife Mary Louise Curtis Bok told the Camden Garden Club “If you take responsibility for flower baskets, we’ll pay for them.” And so, they did for many years!
In 1941, the Club began hanging Christmas wreaths on the lampposts to add a bit of holiday cheer during war time.
This is just one of the ways the Club has made Camden the most beautiful town in Maine. We have now provided lamppost baskets for 101 years, and we do it by raising funds from our annual events such as the Garden Tour and this sponsorship campaign. Local residents and businesses can contribute $250 to offset the cost of providing a basket of flowers in the summer and a wreath at the holidays. Each sponsor will be recognized by a tag on a basket and a wreath.
These flower baskets and wreaths are a major expense that we cannot continue to afford without sponsor support. We are committed to making sure that Camden’s iconic baskets and wreaths continue to grace our downtown.
