BRUNSWICK – Elinor Crowell Marshall Plaisted Winslow passed peacefully on March 10, 2017, at Midcoast Hospital. She was born March 13, 1922, daughter of Edward Fletcher Crowell and Delia Tupper Crowell of South Portland. She was a 1939 graduate of South Portland High School and went on to the University of Maine at Orono where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943.

The following year Coke, as she was known to all her family and friends, married Donald Grant Marshall in South Portland. Donald, A U.S. Air Force pilot in World War II was killed in action in 1945 while flying medical aid and supplies over the Burma Hump. Coke subsequently returned to UMO to pursue her master’s degree in anatomy and physiology, graduating in 1949. It was at Orono that she met Philip Heath Plaisted, of Oakland, whom she married in June 1949. For the next three years the family lived in Ames, Iowa, where Coke was a research scientist, while Phil pursued his doctorate in plant physiology at Iowa State University.

During the ensuing 13 years the family resided in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. Coke was employed as a research scientist at Boyce Thompson Institute in Yonkers as well as an assistant professor at Hunter College. Relocating to Pennington, N.J., Coke accepted a position of professor of anatomy and physiology at Mercer Community College in Trenton. While at Mercer she co-authored and published The Laboratory Manual in Anatomy and Physiology.

Upon Phil's death in 1971, she returned to Maine, eventually settling in Cumberland Foreside. She married Allen Gordon Winslow of Portland on Oct. 28, 1989. Coke worked for Maine Blue Cross/Blue Shield, as well as Canal Bank in various management positions.

An active volunteer, she was a docent at Portland Museum of Art as well as the Munjoy Hill Observatory and a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth.

Coke, always active, enjoyed sports including skiing, sailing and golf, and especially tennis at which she was formerly ranked number two in the over 40 age bracket in the state. She was also an avid world traveler, visiting six continents.

Elinor is survived by her husband, Allen of Brunswick; her daughter, Dawn Marshall Plaisted Swinton of Owls Head; her grandchildren, Libby Swinton Millar of Freeport, Todd Philip Swinton of Owls Head, and Amy Swinton Fredricks of Shaker Heights, Ohio; as well as her great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Emily and Rob Millar of Freeport, and Millie and Maisie Fredricks of Shaker Heights. Allen's family include his son, Robert of Belfast; his daughter, Anne Tarbox of North Yarmouth; and four grandsons, Aaron, Kevin, Nat and Jon.

The family requests that contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the Midcoast Hospital Hospice of Brunswick.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth, 116 Main St. Private interment will be at a later date at Blackpoint Cemetery in Scarborough.
