R. Wayne Patten, obituary
LINCOLNVILLE — R. Wayne Patten, 82, husband, of Leah Thomas Patten, died Sept. 9, 2015, at his home in Lincolnville. Born Nov. 15, 1932, he was one of 17 children born to Donald and Alice (Miller) Patten.
He was a 1950 graduate of Belfast High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957.
On Sept. 30, 1961, Wayne married Leah Thomas.
Wayne spent the bulk of his career as a traveling salesman selling building materials. He often commented that he looked forward to every day at work calling on his customers and being on the road.
In 1986, Wayne and Leah moved to Lincolnville, where he enjoyed cutting wood, snow plowing, gardening and working in his yard. A talented woodworker, he found great pleasure in feeding the birds and the squirrels. He was also an avid reader.
The Marine Corps teaches duty, honor and country, and these values were reflected in the way that Wayne lived his life. Those that loved him would say that he was honest, family oriented, articulate, sometimes outspoken and very proud to have been raised on a farm in a large family with his 16 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Leah Patten of Lincolnville; two sons, Bob Patten and his wife, Ivy, of Franklin, Mass., and Bill Patten and his wife, Diane, of Appleton; six grandchildren, Alexander Patten, Tyler Patten, Kendra Patten Wiley and her husband, Joshua Wiley, Cade Patten, Tucker Patten and Marley Patten; three sisters; three brothers; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Camden with the Rev. David English officiating.
If desired, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice Volunteers of Waldo Company, P.O. Box 772, Belfast, ME 04915.
Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
