Rockland closes Breakwater Park and Breakwater; schools out early
With the approach of Tropical Storm Sandy, which is expected to arrive Monday afternoon, Rockland is closing the Marie H. Reed Breakwater Park at the end of Samoset Road and the Rockland Breakwater, to foot traffic and vehicle traffic. The closure is immediate.
Wave action during and after a storm is highly unpredictable and creates dangerous situations. In 2009, a rogue wave caused by an offshore tropical storm swent people from the rocks at Acadia National Park into the ocean, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old girl, said the Rockland Police Department.
"Always be cautious when near the ocean and be aware of high surf, massive waves and rip tides," said Police Chief Bruce Boucher in a press release Monday.
