Mazurek powers Oceanside to big win over Mount View

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside (1-0) varsity boys basketball team opened the season with a statement as they defeated visiting Mount View (0-1) of Thorndike 74-48 at Oceanside High School Friday night.
After playing what appeared as a good matchup of two teams in the first quarter, which ended with the Mariners up 17-16, Oceanside took over in the second and third quarters building a 38-24 lead at the half and up 61-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Oceanside head coach Matt Breen got a lot of playing time out of the bench in the final stanza as they rolled to the win.
Nick Mazurek led the Mariners with a game high 24 points, six rebounds, a steal and assist. Riley Sprague came of the bench scoring 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Nate Raye also came off the bench in the second quarter and his first basket for the Mariners was a 3-pointer leading to 10 points for the game with a steal, rebound and assist.
Other scorers for the Mariners were, Jarrod Leonardi (8 points, 3 rebounds), Walker Ranney (6 points, 5 rebounds, assist), Griffin Lombardo (5 points, 5 rebounds), Zach Peaco (4 points, steal), Keenan Hendricks (3 points, 5 assists), Zeke Hamlin (2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, steal, block) and Jimmy Strong (1 point, assist). Eli Thorbjornson had (2 rebounds, 2 steals, assist), Jordan Matero (assist) and Sam Atwood (rebound, assist).

For Mount View, Nathan Wren led the Mustangs with 13 points; Mikey Hustus 10; Gavin Simpson nine; Colby Furrow seven; Kevin Richards three; Cole Hannan and Joey Danna two each; and Kalvin Croteau and Devon Davis one each.

Mazurek opened the first quarter with 11 points to carry the Mariners. Mazurek continued in the second quarter leading the team with eight more points to go along with Sprague and Raye putting up five points each. Ranney and Leonardi tallied six points each to lead the Mariners in the third quarter.
In the second and third quarters, the Mariners outscored the Mustangs 44-17 to mostly put the game away.
There were 39 fouls called in the game with a majority of them coming off the hand check call out front which, while not a new foul, is a point of emphasis this season. Players are being called much quicker and this will take awhile to get accustomed to. Defensive movement needs to be with your feet, not your hands. Two of the Oceanside guards that do this well are Eli Thorbjornson and Jimmy Strong who had just one foul called between them.
Oceanside will travel to Belfast Tuesday, Dec. 9 for their next game. The Lions fell 87-27 to Medomak Valley in their opener Friday.
Mount View will will host Medomak Valley Tuesday, Dec. 9 hoping for a different outcome then fellow Waldo County team Belfast had at the hands of the Panthers.
