Dorothy Tolman, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Dorothy Louise Tolman, 86, passed away Dec. 9, 2013, at Windward Gardens in Camden. Born in Vinalhaven June 2, 1927, she was the daughter of Kristen and Hilda (Thulin) Kelwick.
As immigrants from Sweden, her parents came to the United States through Ellis Island, settling on Vinalhaven where there were opportunities working with granite in the quarries. Dorothy was a 1946 graduate of Vinalhaven High School and married Harvey Arey Tolman on Aug. 15, 1947.
A lifelong member of the Union Church, Dot had been very active working on public suppers, served as secretary for the trustees for many years, served as a past president of the church circle for 10 years and organized the Meals On Wheels program held there. She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, the Vinalhaven Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society.
Dot always lived a very active life and will be remembered as a great cook. Her specialty was lemon meringue pie and she was the person to contact if anyone was in need of a home baked pie or dessert. She enjoyed walking, bird watching and staying busy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey A. Tolman, who died Jan. 5, 2004; and a son-in-law, Robert Cook, who died in 2008. Surviving are her two daughters, Mary Welts and her husband, Phil, of Orland, and Cheryl Cook of Belgrade; two grandchildren, Paul Forti and his wife, Sue, of Farmington, N.Y., and Keagan Welts and his partner, Marion Grumwald, of Bucksport; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Kaylin Welts, Melissa Forti, and Maverick and Dakota Cummings; her brother, Bruce Kelwick of Vinalhaven; and her sisters, Jean McDonald of Vinalhaven and Betsy Hachfeld of Faribault, Minn.
Services will be held in the spring and will be announced.
