WARREN and CAMDEN — Maynard L. Knight, 92, life-long Camden resident, died peacefully Oct. 16, 2013, at the home of his son, with whom he had been residing.

Born in Lincolnville June 19, 1921, he was the son of Lindley and Ruth Hopkins Knight. Educated in Camden, he was a 1938 graduate of Camden High School.

On Sept. 8, 1946, Maynard married his best friend and soul mate, Shirley Staples, in Camden. Together they made Camden their home until Mrs. Knight passed away last year.

Maynard began his working career with Packard's Lumber in Rockland, where he worked for 15 years. Later he became a fixture at E.L. Spear in Rockland, where he worked for another 50 years. Even after retiring, Maynard could not stay away from the lumber industry. He spent many hours working part-time as a glazer for Rankin's and Spear's.

Maynard was proud to be a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran. He served during World War II, stationed in Florida and New Mexico as a flight instructor. He was a member of the Camden American Legion, War Memorial Post No. 30.

Along with his wife, Maynard was an active member of John Street Methodist Church in Camden. He served on the building committee and volunteered many hours in construction of the church.

A published poet, Maynard earned several awards and was recognized by Bob Hope and Milton Berle for his work.

He is remembered by his son as a loving family man and hard worker. He will be deeply missed.

Predeceased by his wife, Mr. Knight is survived by his son, Lindley Knight and his wife, Terry, of Warren; his sister, Evelyn Crocker of Camden; his grandchildren, Heather Knight of Skowhegan, Dallas Fields and his wife, Bethany, of Hope, Darren Fields and his wife, Andrea, of Broadalbin, N.Y., Lucas Fields and his wife, Danielle, of Rockland, and Brittany Fields and her companion, Toby Moody, of Hope; and 10 great-grandchildren, Sydney, Hunter, Maddie, Nolan, Rozlyn, Hannah, Parker, Paige, Braydon and Aiden.

A graveside celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Upper Cemetery on Heal Road in Lincolnville. The Rev. Ray Thombs will officiate.
