WARREN — A Waldoboro man who was arrested Feb. 4 by Knox County Sheriff’s deputies for assaulting a woman who suffered life-threatening injuries, made his initial appearance in Knox County Court Feb. 6.

Joshua Howard, 35, was charged with elevated aggravated assault, aggravated criminal mischief, and two counts of violating conditions of release.

At the hearing Judge Sarah Gilbert set Howard’s bail at $25,000 cash, but the suspect remains at the Knox County Jail since the state filed a motion to revoke his deferred disposition from October 2022 for domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He had been free on bail as one of the conditions of the agreement.

According to the affidavit filed by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in court, deputies were called to a residence on Oyster Road in Warren for a reported assault. When police arrived at the scene, they found a woman who was bleeding from her head.

The woman told police that two men came to the house to see her husband and she only knew one of them. After she told both men that her husband was not home, they began breaking windows and three were damaged.

The victim told police that when she went outside to stop the men from breaking the windows, the man she did not know struck her multiple times in the head with a metal pipe. She also said that her young son witnessed the assault, according to the court document.  

The woman was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport and then by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland. On Feb. 6, police confirmed with the charge nurse at Maine Medical Center that she was not in the ICU and would be in the hospital for two to four more days.

Police located the man the woman knew who told police that he went to the house with Howard to speak to her husband about a check for $4,500. The man identified Howard as the one who broke the windows but did not confirm that he also assaulted the woman with the pipe although he brought it with him to the house, according to the affidavit.

Howard was arrested at his home in Waldoboro and denied knowing what was going on and asked why he was being arrested, police said.

His next court appearance is scheduled for April 20.

WARREN — A Waldoboro man has been arrested following an assault that left a Warren woman hospitalized with serious life-threatening injuries.

Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at 2:26 p.m., the Knox Regional Communications Center received a call in reference to an assault that occurred on Oyster River Road in Warren. Knox County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Warren Rescue responded.

The female victim had been struck with an object, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, in a news release. Once on scene, deputies assisted the victim and obtained statements prior to Warren Rescue transporting her to Pen Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Through further investigation it was determined that two male suspects showed up at the residence and a physical confrontation ensued, according to the release. After further investigation and follow up, Knox County deputies and detectives, along with Waldoboro Police, went to a residence in Waldoboro to conduct more follow up. Once at the residence, Knox County deputies arrested Joshua Howard, 35, of Waldoboro, for Elevated Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Criminal Mischief, and Violation of Conditions of Release (bail). Howard was transported to the Knox County Jail.

“The incident is not considered a random act, and it is believed to be an isolated incident,” said the KCSO.

The investigation remains open.
