The Penobscot Bay YMCA Board of Directors said Aug. 20 that Sabrina Murphy, Bath Area Family YMCA’s current CEO, has been appointed as the Interim CEO. Through February 2022, Murphy will serve in this role replacing outgoing CEO Melissa Bellew, who has departed to join the Capital District YMCA in New York.

Prior to being hired at the Bath Area Family YMCA, Murphy worked at the Boothbay Region YMCA and at the Northern York County Family YMCA in Biddeford.

In 2001, Murphy was hired by the Bath Area Family YMCA as the Associate Executive Director and later became Operations Director. In 2010, Murphy became the first woman CEO to lead the Bath Area Family YMCA in its 154-year history.

“I am honored with the opportunity to help the Midcoast community during this transition and to support the Penobscot Bay YMCA Board of Directors and staff with their mission,” said Murphy.

“Our Y is incredibly fortunate to have someone of Sabrina’s caliber and experience to step in and assist during the transition to new leadership,” said YMCA Chief Volunteer Officer, Andy Clement. “During this time, the board will embark on a national CEO search of approximately six months.” 

During this six-month period, Sarah Whytock, the Penobscot Bay YMCA Senior Director of Marketing and Administration, will act as the Interim Director of Operations.

In addition to Whytock’s current position, this role is responsible for daily operations of the Y’s three branches including member experience, supporting staff and community relations. For twenty-one years, Whytock has worked at the Y and has a strong commitment to the community and passion for the Y.
