WALDOBORO — On Dutch Neck in Waldoboro, a “little bit of wilderness” has been preserved for generations to come thanks to the donation of a six-acre parcel of land that hugs the coast of the Medomak River and overlooks Ben’s Island.  

“We are delighted that the Trust is willing to take over ownership of our little bit of wilderness,” said donors Carolyn, Alan, and Ben Cooper of Glasgow, Scotland, in a news release. “We feel privileged to have been able to do just a little bit to help maintain sanity in an otherwise crazy world.”

In the coming years, a trail to be built through this preserve will allow the community to enjoy the beauty of this property, and will serve as the ‘gateway’ to fourteen-acre Ben’s Island. Ben’s Island, with its salt marshes, is accessible at low tide from the mainland, according to the release.

Medomak Valley Land Trust has worked since 1991 to promote and preserve the scenic character and sustainable use of the land in the Medomak River watershed, stewarding over 4,500 acres in nature preserves and conservation easements in 13 towns along the Medomak River.

“MVLT owes its success to donors like the Cooper Family who believe in protecting the fields, streams, and forests of the Medomak River watershed as animal habitat and a space for recreation and enjoyment, and for sustainable fishing, logging, farming, and other industries vital to this area,” the release said.

“MVLT is thrilled to incorporate the Cooper property into their portfolio of protected lands, and thanks the Coopers for their generosity and shared commitment to maintaining the beauty and health of the Medomak River watershed for generations to come.”
