Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Fall Fine Art and Antique Auction Weekend on Nov. 10-11 will present wide ranging collections of ancient and modern rarities, plus jewelry, fine automobiles, designer purses and furs.

Featured artwork will include three Paris scenes by Jean Dufy (1888-1964); an English pastoral landscape by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788); a painting depicting a woman in mourning by Jose Clemente (J.C.) Orozco (Mexico, 1883-1949), and “Spruce Timber,” a watercolor depicting wood cutters by Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009).

Additionally, there will be works by: Diego Rivera (1886-1957), David Teniers, the younger (Flanders, 1610-1690), William Howard Yorke (UK, 1847-1921), Thomas Doughty (1793-1856), Francois Auguste-Rene Rodin (1840-1917), Doris Emrick Lee (1905-1983), Albert Fuller Graves (1859-1936), Waldo Peirce (1884-1970), Ted Tihansky, and many others.

Two important Americana pieces will lead the folk art offerings -- a pre-1850 American carved and gilded tobacco trade figure depicting a standing Turkish boy in Ottoman attire will lead the folk art selection; and a Colonial era sampler with alphabet, numbers and depicting Adam and Eve flanking a serpent wrapped apple tree.

There will also be many examples of fine furniture, such as: a pair of Irish George II period figured walnut chairs; a rare, diminutive Philadelphia Chippendale period walnut four-drawer chest; and a two-piece Knoll ‘Power Play’ laminated bent maple chair and ottoman set designed by Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry and dated 09/01/92.

Of particular interest to Mainers will be:

Historic Rockland double-sided mahogany exterior sign for The Captain Lindsey House Inn;

Custom cherry highboy hand crafted by David Rockwell (former caretaker of the Olson House in Cushing) and a cousin of Andrew Wyeth; and,

Several lots of outstanding early Maine memorabilia and photographs.

Featured among the large collection of Asian antiques: a 17th Century blanc de chine porcelain Guanyin figure, two Zhou dynasty bronze dings or food vessels, and a magnificent Japanese Meiji period bronze sculpture of a man fishing on a carved hardwood base.

The 47-lot estate silver collection will feature two sets of Georg Jensen flatware, a Georg Jensen centerpiece bowl, William Spratling mint julep set, and George II period English salver by silversmith William Peaston.

Jewelry to be presented on Sunday will be led by a ladies antique platinum ring set with a 2.8ct natural Kashmir royal blue sapphire that is flanked by two baguette diamonds and a handmade platinum-iridium sweater clip set with approximately 6.00 carats of diamonds.

Seven fine automobiles will also be offered on Sunday, including: a 1990 Lotus Turbo Esprit SE, a 1967 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, and 1986 Jaguar XJ6 sedan. Additionally, two Seeburg 1950s era jukeboxes will be sold.

Every Thomaston Place auction presents a variety of important decorative objects, and this sale will be no exception, with glass by Lalique and Baccarat, KPM and Meissen porcelain, a selection of fine timepieces, scrimshaw, and many beautiful Oriental carpets.

Thomaston Place will also be presenting two specialty sales on the two days prior to this auction On Thursday, Nov. 8, important artifacts from early Native American and Oceanic civilizations will be sold, including pieces from Pre-Columbian, Taino, Mound Builders, and Polynesian peoples.

And on Friday, Nov. 9 a dazzling array of estate jewelry, fur coats and designer purses, making this an outstanding opportunity for early Holiday gift shopping will be offered.
