ROCKPORT — It was a beautiful day for a 5K race and 42 people came out to support the Camden Hills cross country team by racing the second annual Race for the Crockett Trail 5K.

The Crockett Trail is a multi-purpose trail named after Penny and Charlie Crockett, who served the Camden Hills Regional High School as teachers, coaches, and mentors for a combined 69 years.

The trail serves as the home course for the Camden Hills cross country and Nordic ski teams, as well as the Camden-Rockport cross country team. The Crockett Trail is open year-round to the public as a mile-long nature trail with interpretive signage for 25 different native plant species. In winter the trail also serves as a public Nordic ski trail.

Many of the members of the Camden-Rockport and Lincolnville middle school cross country teams participated in the race. There are some pretty speedy runners coming up through those programs.

The fastest male finisher, David Root, navigated the course in a fast 19:34.9. Jala Tooley was the fastest female of the day, covering the course in 23:40.9.

There were so many prizes awarded to almost everyone who ran the race. There were prizes for the top male and female finishers, the runner up male and female runners, the winners of male and female age groups, and a prize draw for all entered runners. Pretty much everyone went home with a gift certificate. All gift certificates were generously donated by area merchants.
