Whitefield sees second fatal crash in five days
A fatal motor vehicle crash occured in Whitefield, Tuesday morning, December 16, five days after the first crash claimed the life of an Alna resident.
On December 16, 2025, at approximately 5:50 a.m., the Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle accident on the Gardiner Road, in Whitefield.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, in a news release, Gavin P. Martin, 21, of Edgecomb, had been operating his tan 2005 Chevy Colorado truck east bound on the Gardiner Road. At the intersection of the Gardiner Road and Hunts Meadow Road, Martin's vehicle crossed over the westbound lane and left the roadway. On the westbound shoulder, the vehicle struck a utility pole, breaking the pole. Martin's vehicle rolled onto its roof and came to rest in a grove of trees.
Martin was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and was not wearing his seatbelt, according to LCSO. The vehicle airbags did deploy.
"Unfortunately, Mr. Martin died in this event," said LCSO.
"The initial investigation indicates that speed was a factor in this collision," said the release.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies were assisted by Whitefield Fire & Delta Ambulance. The roadway was closed to traffic for three hours.
If any motorists witnessed the event, they are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 207-882-7332. Deputy Rogers is the primary investigator.
