Verna Ames, obituary
ROCKLAND — Verna M. Ames, 78, passed away Feb. 8, 2014, at home in Rockland, surrounded by her family. Born in Bristol April 15, 1935, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Eva (Gamage) Thompson. The Thompson family moved to Rockland, then in 1941 to Matinicus, where Verna attended school. She later received a GED diploma from Georges Valley High School in Thomaston.
Verna married Keith N. Ames of Matinicus and they lived there until his death in 1975. While living on Matinicus, Verna took up oil painting, creating many beautiful scenes of the island.
Her employment included working as a cook, a housekeeper, a companion for the elderly and as a nurses' aid. In 1981, Verna moved to Rockland, where she worked at Holmes Packing Company.
Verna met her companion, James Follett of Rockland, and they have been together for more than 20 years. They shared many similar interests and activities and enjoyed each other's company, making them the perfect couple.
Verna was known for her hand knitted and crocheted socks, sweaters and baby sets and enjoyed making these items for family and friends. An outgoing person, Verna loved socializing with family and friends. During her last days, she knew she was going to be with her savior.
Surviving is her long-time companion, James Follett of Rockland; two children, Deborah Johnson and her companion, Hank Thompson, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Keith N. Ames Jr. and his companion, Sheri Cohen, of Newburgh; four grandchildren, Jessica Rollins, Kevin Johnson, Keith N. Ames III and Bryant Ames; five great-grandchildren; a brother, James Thompson and his wife, Florence, of Owls Head; a sister, June Martin of Vinalhaven; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Keith N. Ames Sr.; her brother, Walter Thompson; and her sisters, Phyllis Collamore and Marjorie Gordon.
In keeping with her wishes, there are no services planned. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
