LIBERTY — The Town of Liberty’s Walker School Repurposing Committee has launched a regional tenant search and Tenant Interest Survey for the Liberty community center, a major step in transforming the former Walker Elementary School into a mixed-use municipal and community facility, according to the Committee, in a news release.

The $3.5 million redevelopment project will preserve and modernize the historic Walker School, "creating a community-centered destination for Liberty and surrounding communities," said the committee.

The facility is expected to open in June 2028.

The Committee is inviting businesses, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, educational providers, health and wellness practitioners, artists, entrepreneurs, and community organizations to explore future tenancy and partnership opportunities. The Tenant Interest Survey seeks feedback on space needs, desired amenities, programming opportunities, and potential collaborations.

The Liberty community center is envisioned as a sustainable community asset that combines municipal services with education, arts, recreation, wellness programming, business development, and public gathering spaces. Planned renovations include accessibility improvements, life-safety systems, upgraded HVAC and electrical infrastructure, commercial kitchen, and flexible spaces designed to accommodate a variety of tenants and community uses.

Multiple large classrooms and smaller rooms will be available for reconfiguration.The building has a large kitchen and walk-in freezer, as well as a gymnasium. The property includes a children’s playground, community gardening space, and greenhouse. It adjoins the town’s recreation fields, including a planned ADA-accessible perimeter walking trail, and connects to the Haystack Mountain hiking trail network, making the complex an attractive destination for all ages.

"We are preserving an important piece of our town’s history while creating a modern, accessible facility that will support our community for generations to come, offering opportunities for economic development and social well-being."

Community feedback has highlighted interest in childcare, youth programs, senior activities, recreation and cultural programming, emergency shelter capabilities, food preparation and food security initiatives, and expanded municipal services.

Organizations interested in future tenancy, programming partnerships, or shared-use opportunities are encouraged to complete the Tenant Interest Survey and contact the Committee. Early participation will help ensure the renovated facility is designed for optimal tenant use while supporting community priorities and long-term financial sustainability.
