Terrence Flaherty, obituary
WARREN — Terrence F. Flaherty, 69, died after a long illness, Dec. 6, 2013, at the Veterans Medical Center Hospice at Togus.
Born April 5, 1944, in Rockland, he was the son of Colby W. the 1st and Norma Shannon Flaherty. Educated in Rockland schools, he was a 1962 graduate of Rockland High School. In his younger years, Terry was a member of the Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church in Rockland.
In the fall of 1962, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After basic training he was stationed for two years with the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C. The next two years he spent in Seattle, Wash., where he served aboard a small ship, sailing between Seattle and Anchorage, Alaska, until being honorably discharged in 1966.
On Jan. 23, 1966, he married Susan S. Foley in Warren. Terry and Sue have resided in Warren all their married lives.
During the early years of his career, Terry worked at Rockland Shipyard. For more than 22 years he worked as a rigger at Bath Iron Works.
Terry and Sue were inseparable, always doing things together. Terry often said, "Whatever we've done, we've done it together."
With his wife, Terry served eight years as a Cub Scout leader with Troop 224 in Warren. He was an active member of the Second Congregational Church in Warren and a regular participant in the Couples Club Variety Show.
For many years, with his wife, Terry made crafts that they sold at Montsweag Flea Market in Woolwich. At that flea market, they enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships with other vendors. They also enjoyed camping with their family throughout the United States.
Other than his parents, Terry was predeceased by one grandson, Cody Flaherty in 1995. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sue of Warren; three sons, Shawn Flaherty and his wife, Antoinette, of Firestone, Colo., Timothy Flaherty and his wife, Stephanie, and James Flaherty, all of Warren; six grandchildren, Nicole and Chase Flaherty, Alexandra and Steven Flaherty, and Alyssa and Rachel Faith Flaherty; four brothers, Timothy Flaherty of Lincoln, Neb., Colby W. Flaherty II of Jacksonville, N.C., Michael Flaherty and his wife, Marie, of Warren, and William Holbrook of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Colleen Weed of Windsor and Coral Coombs and her husband, Michael, of Lincolnville; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. The Rev. Robin Honaker will officiate. A burial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 162 Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
