Switching uniforms for Special Olympics
Taking a few moments to enjoy the lighter side, runners representing Rockland Police, Knox County Sheriff's Office, Coast Guard, and the District Attorney's Office traded dress shoes for sneakers, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, to unitedly represent Special Olympics Maine. Six local Special Olympians joined the group for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Relay for Special Olympics.
The Rockland section of the run began at 8 a.m., sharp, from Maritime Farms on Park Street, in Rockland. With participants arriving sporadically and last-minute to the starting point, conversations were brief, yet jovial, bringing easy smiles to employees who often find themselves in tough positions. Already smiling were the athletes, who were excited to start their events at the University of Maine in Orono, following the Friday evening cauldron lighting.
This morning's runners were fortunate to run their stretch prior to the Air Quality Alert for Sensitive Groups, which was due to become a problem after 11 a.m.
