Letter to the editor: Satellite Club of West Bay Rotary

‘So, You Think You Know Maine’

Thu, 01/16/2020 - 9:00pm

The Camden community is a thing to behold: People show up and support many of the same Rotary fundraisers year after year, like the Toboggan Nationals, the Duck Derby, Christmas Tree and Wreath Sales, Windjammer Festival pancake breakfasts and chowder cook-offs.

They show up for new events, too.

More than 70 people, including eight teams of six, Interact members from Camden Hills Regional High School, spectators, including Rotarians from Boothbay Harbor and the members of the Satellite Club of West Bay Rotary turned out for “So, You Think you Know Maine” to enjoy and evening of trivia at the Lodge of the Snow Bowl, which graciously hosted the event.

Tom Chester, West Bay Rotary member, served as master of ceremonies, and led the contestants through more than 60 questions about Maine and its history in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Maine’s statehood.

Heather Moran, of the Maine State Archives, served as a rentable ringer to help teams with the tougher questions. Generous donors, including Alison Langley Photography, Camden Clothesline, Lyman Morse, and others donated prizes for the raffle. The grand prize will be given to the Shields Mission Project of the Camden Congregational Church. It was the grand prize of the Trivia Contest for the winning team to choose the recipient of the net proceeds, believed to be in excess of $1300.

The team that won was initially calling itself “Flying by the Seat of our Pants” but by the end of the event, decided they were really “Rodney Lynch and 5 others,” including Rodney Lynch, Kristen Lindquist, Tim and Lisa Dresser, and Glen and Mary Sargent with moral support from Patty and Peter Berke and current West Bay Rotary President Kim Milton.

Teams representing the Dugal family, Lyman Morse at Wayfarer, PAWS, Floor Magic, Allen Financial, Camden Rotary and Camden Real Estate were bested by Lynch’s team, but everyone came away with a smile and having learned some interesting facts about Maine.

Allen Financial won the prize for best table decoration with a down-east theme complete with Maine-shaped plaid sugar cookies, and Camden Rotary won the prize for best costumes with a Hawain theme.

As a new group of Rotarians, we want to thank all of them and others who helped to make the event a special first-ever fundraiser for the Satellite group.
