SPRUCE HEAD — Senior Newman Blanchard, 87, of Spruce Head, Maine, passed away after a brief illness, on March 2, 2021, in his home, with his family nearby.

Senior was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to George Russell Blanchard and Barbara (Senior) on November 4, 1933. He grew up in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, where his family had long owned and operated the Blanchard Bros. Quarry. He graduated from Uxbridge High School and then attended Vermont Academy, graduating in 1952. He then joined the US Army, being discharged in 1956 with the rank of SP3. He then briefly attended both Dartmouth College, and Bridgeport University in Connecticut.

He lived and worked in Connecticut until he moved to Maine in 1968 and hand built his permanent home in Spruce Head. He worked as a special projects engineer for Tibbetts Industries in Camden and spent 40 happy years there until his retirement in 2008.

Senior was a creative man with numerous hobbies and talents. He loved sailing, and once had a hand in building a schooner. He was an incredible stone worker and could often be found out in the woods near his home looking for the perfect granite stones for his latest project. He also created beautiful and unique silver and turquoise jewelry that adorns many in the area still. His endless sense of wanderlust had him spend a lifetime of travel, for work and for fun, whether by plane, train, or VW Bus with his wife and two kids. He had a special fondness for Germany, but would be just as happy taking a drive to Massachusetts.

Senior is predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Charlotte (Joy) Blanchard of Spruce Head, his daughter Jessica Joy Blanchard and her husband Jon Newton of Rockland, Maine, and his son Geof Russell Blanchard and his wife Kelly (Koon) of Lyle, Washington.

He leaves behind three beloved grandsons, Jackson Allen, Riley Newton, and Henry Blanchard.

He is also survived by his two younger brothers; Barry Blanchard, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Sam Blanchard, of Woburn, Massachusetts, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Senior will be remembered by special friends Chris and Holly Moiles of Waldoboro, and Charlie and Eileen Hugo of Stoneham, Massachusetts.

He will be very missed by his cat, Josephine, and his dog, Heidi.

Per Senior’s request, no services will be held. There will be a celebration of his life later this summer.
