Senate unanimously supports Sen. Herbig’s career and technical education bill

AUGUSTA — The Maine Senate unanimously voted Thursday, Feb. 27 in favor of a bill by Sen. Erin Herbig, D-Belfast, to support career and technical education (CTE).
The bill, LD 2022, “An Act To Provide Funding for Capital Improvements and Equipment for Career and Technical Education Centers and Regions,” authorizes the Commissioner of Education to invest $4 million toward CTE.
There are 27 CTE centers in Maine — including the Waldo County Technical Center in Waldo — that serve more than 8,000 high school students and many more in adult education programs, according to a news release from the Senator’s office.
If legislation is successful this session, it will be the first time CTE has received an infusion of funds for equipment and capital improvements since 1998, the release noted.
“I keep hearing from business owners across Waldo County that they can’t find the skilled workers they need,” said Sen. Herbig in a statement. “At the same time, we’re losing young Mainers because economic opportunities seem more abundant elsewhere. It shouldn’t be that way. We can address this problem by supporting career and technical education, and I thank my fellow legislators for their bipartisan support.”
Sen. Herbig’s bill faces further votes before the Maine Senate and House before it is sent to the governor.
