Joel was born July 18, 1937, in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated from the Business School at the University of Connecticut.

Joel is survived by his children, Danielle Stordy and her husband Mathew Stordy, Jonathan Karp and his wife Leslie Frazier, Seth Bresnan, and Leah Karp; his grandchildren, William, Laura, Colette, and Tatum; and his loving partner, Susan Higgins.

He also leaves behind his nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved second wife, Barbara, in 2003. 

Joel enjoyed traveling, art, watching the WNBA, and visiting with his many friends. Above all, he enjoyed the life that he built in Maine.

Joel will be remembered for his love of learning, his sense of humor, his desire to help others, and most importantly, the friendships and family relationships he cherished.
