Rusty Brace to appear at Pennsylvania prison Nov. 4
Convicted felon Rusty Brace is to appear at Allenwood Correctional Facility Nov. 4 at 2 p.m., as stipulated by the federal Bureau of Prisons. Allenwood is in Allenwood, Penn., and consists of three male-only facilities, a low security facility, medium security facility, and a prison.
Low Security Correctional Institute Allenwood has 1,333 male inmates; the medium facility has 1,315, and the high security penitentiary has 946.
Brace, 82, of Rockport, was sentenced Oct. 9 in U.S. First District Court to four years in federal prison for stealing $4.6 million in donations that had been made to United Mid-Coast Charities, a Camden–based charitable nonprofit.
According to his attorney, Peter DeTroy, it will be up to the prison to decide which facility he ultimately starts out in.
“The prison makes that decision only after he reports to the prison and is processed,” said DeTroy. “Personally, I think it likely he will be assigned to the low security facility.”
Attorneys had said prior to the sentencing that the federal Bureau of Prisons would assign Brace to whatever prison had space, what Brace's medical condition is and the court's determination of the severity of the crime itself.
Judge George Singal had recommended at the sentencing that Brace report to a prison with medical facilities.
According to a medical summary included in the court documents, Brace suffers several maladies associated with aging, all controlled with medication. He has undergone knee surgery, and had pneumonia recently, as well as falls. He also struggles with situational depression and anxiety, the doctor's report said.
The average annual cost of housing an inmate in federal prison is $29,000 to $31,000 each year, according to the Federal Register, 2015 numbers.
