Rockport seeks citizen water quality scientists to help monitor ponds

Thu, 05/10/2018 - 12:15pm

The Rockport Conservation Commission (RCC) is partnering with the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) to monitor the water quality in five of the seven water bodies within the town’s borders. The Commission seeks pond monitoring volunteers to help collect and test samples every two weeks throughout the summer. No prior experience is required and all training and equipment other than a boat will be provided.

The goal is to find participants within the community at large to help with the monitoring process as needed for Chickawaukie Pond, Rocky Pond, Lily Pond, Tolman Pond and Maces Pond.

    The volunteer commitment would include:

    1. Attending a Water Quality Workshop and training session on May 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Auburn. Carpooling options and lunch will be provided.

    2. Collecting data once every two weeks from June to October, and submitting data directly to the VLMP. All equipment for testing will be provided. A boat is required. For more information visit mainevlmp.org/volunteer-info/water-quality-monitors/training-certification

The RCC has been monitoring Rockport rivers, streams and the harbor since 2008 with success. The Commission is excited to start the sampling of the ponds beginning in June.

If interested in participating, email RCC member Marci Casas at marcijcasas@gmail.com or call (207) 318-0131.

The Rockport Conservation Commission promotes the protection, conservation and enhancement of the natural resources of Rockport. It is responsible for conducting research, educating the public and making recommendations to appropriate town bodies, and working with other conservation organizations throughout the region to sustain the natural ecosystems for current and future generations to use and enjoy.

The meetings are public, and held on the first Thursday of each month at noon in the Richardson Room at the Rockport Town Office.
