Robert Lawrence Davee, obituary

CAMDEN — Robert “Bob” Lawrence Davee, 86, of Camden died on Monday, February 27, 2023, at his home after battling prostate cancer. Born in Tenafly, New Jersey on March 4, 1936, he was the son of Lawrence W. and Muriel (Goodrich) Davee.

A 1959 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a 1968 graduate of Worchester Polytechnic Institute School of Industrial Management, Bob spent a number of years working in Ohio and Massachusetts before moving to Camden. In Camden, he joined L&M Construction in 1968, then renamed to Maine Coast Construction, which he served as president for 54 years.

Active in community service and the Town of Camden, Bob served as Selectman and Planning Board chairman. He wrote the first Zoning Board ordinance, reorganized the Camden Snow Bowl, applied to the U.S. Federal Parks and Recreation Commission to obtain Curtis Island, designed and installed a dewatering system at the sewerage treatment plant, and also worked on the development of the Camden Opera House building.

The Mid-Coast Children’s Services was founded by Bob. The organization provides early intervention and training for very young handicapped children. Later, he served on the board for Coastal Opportunities for 24 years and was a former a President of Coastal Workshop.

Bob has also served as the President of the Camden Community Health Care Center, Vice-president of Northeast Health, President of Health Connections, and member and Paul Harris Fellow recipient of Camden Rotary. In 2007, Bob served as the lead project manager in the reconstruction of the Camden Arch which was a collaborative effort between the Camden and West Bay Rotary Clubs.

In 1984, Bob was honored when the Town of Camden proclaimed March 13 to be Robert L. Davee Day in recognition of his extensive community service.

In 2019, University of Maine presented Bob and the Davee family with the Legacy Fogler award for five generations attending U-Maine.

Bob’s hobbies included fixing just about anything, spending time at Sebec Lake, boating, and taking Jenny out to lunch.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at PALS for their compassionate care over the past few months.

Bob was predeceased by first wife, Anne (Emery) Davee, and his second wife, Norma (Carlson) Davee in 2020.

Surviving are his children, Michael Davee and his wife, Lisa, of Rockport; John Davee of Hope and his significant other, Joanna Hall of Rockport; Deborah (Davee) Stiles and her husband, William, of Bothell, Washington; Stanwood (Laurie) Bryant of Camden, Rhonda Bryant of Carrabasset Valley; and Jennifer Davee of Rockland; brother James Davee of Athens, Georgia; 8 grandchildren, John N. Davee, William E. Davee, Sarah (Matt) Davee Sawyer, Miles (Cassondra) Davee, Molly Davee, Peter Bryant, Chris Bryant, and Weston Bryant, and great-granddaughter, Sophie Sawyer.
