Friday was a busy day in high school sports, with baseball, softball, tennis and track and field all taking place around the Midcoast.
BASEBALL
Camden Hills 4, Lincoln Academy 0 — The Camden Hills Regional High School baseball team had an outstanding effort from the whole team against an outstanding pitcher, to not only capture the 4-0 win over the Lincoln Academy Eagles, but also slip past Oceanside into first place.
The Windjammers have 81.8359 Tournament Index points in first while Oceanside is second at 79.8828. The two teams split during the regular season, with the Mariners taking the opening day game 5-4 and Camden Hills returning the outcome with a 5-3 win in game two. Game three for these two teams could easily be the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Championship if things remain the way they are.
On Friday Chandler Crans took the mound for the Windjammers against A.J. Oliver for Lincoln Academy. A pitchers duel was expected with these two and that is just what the fans got until the sixth inning, when Camden Hills exploded for four runs.
Crans went seven innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out eight. Crans’ season record is now 4-0. He has four complete games and his earned run average is 0.00. His batting average against is .115, his on-base against percentage is .190. In 27 innings he has allowed no earned runs, has allowed 11 hits and nine walks while striking out 24. The amazing fact is he is just one-fourth of the Windjammers’ pitching staff, which has a team ERA of 0.75.
Oliver was nearly as perfect through the first five and then ran into trouble in the sixth inning. He allowed four runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three.
In the sixth inning Michael Wolff drove in Ben Rollins with an infield hit, and one batter later, John Hall drove in two more with a single to break the game open. Sam Gimlewicz doubled in Hall to close out the scoring.
Oliver and catcher Wally Morris got the two hits for Lincoln Academy.

Erskine Academy 9, Medomak Valley 6 — The Panthers of Medomak Valley traveled to South China to take on the Eagles of Erskine Academy, falling 9-6.
Nick DePatsy took the loss for the Panthers pitching 3-1/3 innings, allowing nine runs, eight earned on 10 hits and there walks while striking out one. Adam Wilcox pitched 2-2/3 in relief, allowing three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Zack Glidden started for Erskine, but lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk. Jared Gartley pitched 6-2/3 innings of solid relief, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Hitting for Medomak Valley were Micah Williamson (double, 2 singles, run), Riley McCollett (double, single, walk, run, RBI), Nick DePatsy (single, walk, run), Ollie Brown (double, single, 2 runs, RBI), Patrick Madden (single, 2 RBI), Tyler Emerson (double, 2 RBI) and Colton Spear (walk).
For Erskine it was Caleb Cummings (2 singles, run), Tyler Bailey (double, 2 singles, stolen base, 2 runs), Ryan Rodrigue (double, single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Nate Martin (single, stolen base, run), Zach Childs (single), Luke Peabody (2 singles, 2 walks, 3 stolen bases, 2 runs), Jake Rideout (single, walk, RBI) and Jared Gartley (home run, run, RBI).
Leavitt 8, Mount View 6 – The Mount View baseball team hosted Leavitt of Turner Friday in a KVAC baseball match up in Thorndike.
With the Hornets on top 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning Leavitt took an 8-3 lead with three runs in the inning. Mount View rallied back for three runs, but fell short of the comeback losing 8-6.
Pitching for Mount View was Mikey Hustus (5 innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, walk, 3 strikeouts), Emmett Shell (1 inning, 2 hits 2 runs) and Joey Danna (1 inning, hit, run, walk, strikeout).
For Leavitt, Drew Gosselin (5 1/3 innings, 11 hits, 6 runs, strikeout) and Levi Morin (1 2/3 innings, hit).
Hitting for Mount View were, Mikey Hustus (2 singles, run, RBI) Emmett Shell (2 singles, 2 runs, RBI), Nathan Wren (singe), David Clark (single, RBI), Erik Larrabee (single), Kenny McGray (single, run), Cole Hannan (single), Joey Danna (single, RBI) and Jack Axsom (2 singles, run).
For Leavitt, Josh Daigle (2 singles, 3 runs), Sam Godfrey (3 singles, run, RBI), Drew Gosselin (single, double, 2 RBIs, run), Mitchel Davis (home run, single, RBI), Nate Combs (triple, run), Nate Rousseau (home run, run, 2 RBIs) and Julian Kirovac (single, run).
Oceanside 15, Gardiner 5 – Nick Mazurek fired four innings of shutout baseball for his fifth win of the season and had three hits, including a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, in the Oceanside home win.
Ryan Allender ripped a three-run home run, his first of the season, while Nick Judge and Zac Roman each had two hits. Roman scored four runs for the Mariners, while J.T. Tobin and Scott Strong each drove in a pair of runs.
Josh Mushke had two hits and Logan Peacock added two RBIs for Gardiner.
Nick Judge pitched one inning of relief allowing five runs, two earned on three hits and a walk with a strikeout.
SOFTBALL
Gardiner 7, Oceanside 0 – The Mariners could not put anything together Friday falling to the Tigers 7-0 at home.
Brittany Rollins was dealing strikes for Gardiner allowing no runs on six hits and no walks while fanning 12 batters.
Paige Tyler (6-5) took the loss for the Mariners. Tyler and Alexis Davis combined to allow seven runs on four hits and seven walks with five strikeouts.
“Oceanside had to many errors, walks, and wild pitches,” said Oceanside coach Rusty Worcester. “Gardner is a very good team and they took full advantage of these opportunities. We did hold Gardner who averages thirteen hits a game to only four. We left five runners in scoring position and just couldn't get the big hit, also hats off to Brittany Rollins who threw her rise ball consistently and we chased the high pitch with twelve strike outs.”
Hitting for Oceanside were, Alexis Mazurek (double, single), Ari Curtis (double, single), and Trittany Penn and Brianna Dugan (single each).
For Gardiner, Lauren Chadwick (single, 2 RBIs), Rollins, single), Katelyn Boyington (single, RBI) and Nicole Chadwick (single).
“Alexis Mazurek went 2-3 with a single and a double,” said Worcester. “I'm very proud of her as a freshman getting two hits off this top quality pitching today. Ari Curtis also had a great day at the plate going 2-3 also with a double and single. She is a gamer and works very hard behind the plate for the mariners.”
Lincoln Academy 3, Camden Hills 1 – The Windjammers fell to Lincoln Academy Friday afternoon in Rockport 3-1.
The Camden Hills pitcher went the distance allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking our four.
Abby Farrin went the distance in the win allowing one run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Hitting for Camden Hills were, Maddie Bowman (double, single, run), Hannah Bode, Natalie Hamalanian and Bekah Hilt (single each).
For Lincoln Academy, Farrin, Margaret Skiff, Danielle Pinkham and Logan Low had a single each.
GIRLS TENNIS
Camden Hills 5, Lincoln Academy 0 – The Windjammers turned to the indoor courts of the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport for their match Friday where they dominated in Pro Sets.
Here are the individual results with Cmaden Hills players listed first, in singles, Abby Blakeley beat Nettie Hoagland 8-1; Carrie Helmholz defeated Eloise Kelly 8-2; and Katie Vannorsdall defeated Alex Welsh 8-0.
In doubles, Hannah Olsen and Sophia Landry defeated Kate Westhavor and Polina Scimone 9-7; and Emily Haining and Serene Landry defeated Tessa Walsh and Hana Hirano 8-5.
In exhibition, Frances Pendleton and Emily Haining defeated Olivia Li and Shiann Kenne 8-2.
