WAYNE — Peter Emery, 78, of Wayne, Maine, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on November 17, 2025. He was born on March 29, 1947, to Marjorie and Frances Talbot and was raised in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
Peter’s life was shaped by family, learning, athletics, and a deep love of the natural world.
He was predeceased by his sisters Madaline Syvertson and Eugenia White, and by his infant son, Trevor Foss Emery.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Deborah Foss Emery; his sister Rebecca Biggar; and his children Kendra Emery (Nicholas Citriglia), Trent Emery (Alicia Emery), and Seth Emery (Nikki Emery); and his beloved grandchildren Juliann, Enzo, Vera, Charlotte, Amelia, and Calvin.
Peter graduated from Wilmington High School in 1965, where he excelled in hockey, baseball, and football and was later inducted into the Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. A standout athlete, he was a league MVP in hockey, a two-year captain of the baseball team, and a member of a state championship teams. His talent attracted attention from numerous college coaches, but after visiting Maine, he chose to attend Colby College, where he played four years of baseball and hockey. He served as captain of the baseball team, earned All-Maine and All-New England honors, and was named Colby’s Baseball MVP in 1969. In 1970, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox.
Peter found his true calling in education. Over nearly 40 years, he taught mathematics and coached baseball and hockey at schools in Massachusetts and Maine, including Lisbon High School, Maranacook Community School, and 27 years at Mt. Blue High School. He also taught college mathematics through the University of Maine at Augusta, inspiring generations of students with his love of learning, discipline, and curiosity.
In 1982, Peter and Deborah settled in Wayne, Maine, where they raised their family. Peter devoted decades to restoring the fields and forests surrounding their home, creating hiking and ski trails and cultivating a beloved apple orchard. He shared these woods with his children and grandchildren, teaching them about wildlife, weather, and the simple magic of the natural world. He was an avid lifelong athlete, enjoying running, cycling, tennis with his neighbors, and later golf, including a memorable golf trip to Scotland with friends.
Peter’s family is deeply grateful for the exceptional care he received from New England Cancer Care, and Stephanie Collins at Maine Osteopathic Medicine, Andwell Hospice and most importantly his wife Deborah Emery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 2, at 3 p.m., in the Bodman Performing Arts Center at Kents Hill School for all who wish to honor Peter.
