nicknamed Dissonance; ‘among the greatest quartet compositions in history’

Part 4 of DaPonte Onstage: Mozart String Quartet in C Major

Fri, 04/16/2021 - 1:00pm

Part four of the DaPont String Quartet’s “Onstage” six–part concert series premieres on April 24, with Mozart String Quartet in C Major, at onstage.daponte.org.

Filmed at the Rockport Opera House in early 2021, the April 24 concert release is a work from 1785 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which was dedicated to Haydn. This quartet in four movements, nicknamed “Dissonance”, is among the greatest quartet compositions in history, according to DSQ, in a news release. The first movement establishes the dissonance early, through a brooding lack of harmonic resolution – a civilized, yet anxious, conversation amongst four voices.

The slow, sweet Andante movement is developed with overtones of loss, a sense of the shadow that can shroud a heart in despair. The third, very melodic movement includes a shift to a minor key, bringing a restlessness to bear.

“The rich rondo of the fourth movement brings a lively lyricism with unexpected harmonies – a fitting finale to a beautiful piece that for centuries has cast a bright light into Mozart’s innovative mind,” said DSQ.

Concerts #1, 2, and 3 are already available!  All are free to our wonderful and supportive audiences.
