Osmond G. ‘Woody’ Woodman, obituary
IOWLS HEAD and WARREN — Osmond G. “Woody” Woodman, 89, died peacefully, following a period of declining health Oct. 24, 2013, at Togus VA Medical Center and Hospice facility.
Born in Rockland March 24, 1924, he was the son of Earl and Arlene Sawyer Woodman. Woody spent his early years in Ash Point and Owls Head. He later attended Rockland schools.
After high school, he began his career at a shipyard in Portland. He was later drafted into the U.S. Army, serving overseas during World War II. While stationed overseas, Woody kept up correspondence with the love of his life, Norma. As soon as he returned to the states, the two were married Jan. 5, 1946. Together they made their home in Owls Head and Ash Point their entire married life. One of their favorite pastimes was going dancing at the Blue Goose.
A jack-of-all trades and hard worker his entire life, Mr. Woodman has had many accomplishments in his life. He has worked for a sheet metal plant, as a lobsterman, in the construction field and with McMahons Heating and Oil Company, just to name a few. Following the death of his father, Woody built Woodman's Trailer Park in Owls Head. He was solely responsible for the site-work, design and construction of the park.
Although he was a man of few words, Woody spoke volumes throughout his life. He showed his love for his family by spending countless hours with his grandson, sharing his knowledge and wisdom with him. He was full of helpful advice, knowledgeable on any subject and always willing to lend a hand.
Later in life, Woody took great joy in going boating and fishing in Rockland Harbor with his daughter and family. He was a devoted husband, and when his wife became ill, Woody poured his heart and soul into caring for her, stopping only when his own health would not allow him to continue. Mrs. Woodman passed away in December 2011.
Most recently, Woody has enjoyed the love and attention he received while living with his daughter and her family. The love they shared will transcend time.
Predeceased by his wife, Norma, in 2011; and a brother, William Woodman; Woody is survived by his daughter, Maria Heal and her husband, Ricky Sr., of Warren; his grandson, Ricky Heal Jr. and his wife, Amanda; and a step great-granddaughter, Arianna Cloutier all of Owls Head; his sisters, Lura Michaels and Freda Stone and her husband, Chet, all of Owls Head; as well as several nieces and one nephew.
A graveside service of love and remembrance will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m at Achorn Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.
