MountainSea Expeditions offers wilderness programs for local youth

MountainSea Expeditions offers outdoor adventure and leadership programs to local youth ages 6 to 16. With both day camps and multi-day overnight canoeing and sea kayaking expeditions, MountainSea Expeditions is a unique educational organization created to inspire and support local youth in the Maine outdoors.

One of their upcoming summer 2022 programs, the “Maine Seas, Skies, & Leadership Program” will weave together astronomy, meteorology, sea kayaking, camp craft and team-building into a five-day adventure along the Maine Island Trail.

Participants will paddle through the nooks and crannies of coastal islands while searching for remote sandy beaches, gunkholes, and hidden passages.

Evenings will be spent star-gazing and learning from MountainSea’s astronomer/guide Nina Buyers from the Fiske Planetarium in Boulder, Colorado.

Josh Lipkowitz, co-owner and guide for MountainSea said he is thrilled to roll out the “Seas, Skies & Leadership” program this summer.

“It is exciting to design and offer programming that blends together outdoor adventure, leadership development and field science in a cohesive and impactful way,” he said, in a news release. “I feel this is a unique opportunity for young people to experience our ocean playground in a way that is equal measures exploratory science, technical skills building, group and personal challenge, and all-out fun.”

“MountainSea Expeditions was such an excellent adventure and life experience for my child”, said Jaime Stone, principal of Camden-Rockport Middle School and parent of a MountainSea camper attending the multi-day sea kayak expedition last summer. “I highly recommend to anyone who can access this program to jump in with both feet. The guides are expert facilitators and supporters of adventure programming and young people in general. I’m so grateful for this experience for my daughter.”

This summer, MountainSea is also offering a six-day canoeing and leadership expedition in western Maine, in addition to a nature-based day camp for younger children in both Rockport and Hope, and an Adventure Day Camp for fifth through seventh graders.

MountainSea Expeditions, of Rockport, was founded in 2020 by three local educators, Josh Lipkowitz, Sarah Schrader and Jen Porter, with a mission to weave together science, nature, leadership development and adventure for local youth of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

In addition to their slate of summer programs available to the public, they also provide outdoor & leadership development programs for Sundog Outdoor Expeditions, the Camden-Rockport Middle School and Alford Lake Camp.  They have a sliding scale for their programs in addition to a scholarship fund to support participants in need of tuition assistance.
