Medomak Valley Land Trust secures 40th easement
WALDOBORO — During the week of August 15, the Medomak Valley Land Trust (MVLT) secured their 40th easement. The property lies within the "Three Brooks Forest," a 7,000-acre roadless tract of land home to moose, bear, fisher, bobcats, and other woodland creatures.
Generously donated by Emily Kalina, the 98-acre property abuts a 200-acre conservation easement owned by Emily's sister, Martha Kalina, and brother-in-law, Rick Skoglund.
This property expands upon an uninterrupted forest corridor that provides sheltered habitat for animals to roam freely without roadways and other hazards that threaten survival. The headwaters of two major streams that feed into the Medomak River – Waterman Brook and Farnsworth Brook – are also located on the property.
The land will be open for sustainable forestry, hiking, snowmobiling, and other low-impact recreational uses, creating a space for the community to enjoy the rich landscape that makes this corner of Maine so special. The Waldoboro Sno-Crawlers snowmobile trail already crosses through the property, and MVLT may create additional trails in the future.
With the signing of this easement, the Medomak Valley Land Trust surpassed yet another benchmark: the nonprofit organization has now protected over 4,500-acres in the Medomak River watershed.
For over 25 years, MVLT has been working to promote and preserve the scenic character and sustainable use of the land that makes up the Medomak River watershed. It currently stewards over 20 miles of trails open to the public within their 20 nature preserves and 40 conservation easements in 13 townships along the Medomak River.
MVLT has a proud history of supporting the Medomak watershed community, stewarding healthy fields, streams, and forests for animal habitat as well as the fishing, logging, blueberry and other industries this area is known for.
MVLT is thrilled to incorporate the Kalina property into their portfolio of protected lands, and thanks every past and future easement donor for their generosity and shared commitment to maintaining the beauty and health of the Medomak River watershed for generations to come.
