Maynard L. Whitehouse, obituary

CAMDEN — Maynard Lester Whitehouse, 77, passed away July 16, 2013. Born in Camden Jan. 26, 1936, he was the son of Maynard Elmer Whitehouse and Carrie Arvilla (Gray) Whitehouse.

He grew up in Camden and graduated in the Camden High School Class of 1954. Maynard then attended Bates College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1958. He then attended Purdue University earning a Master of Science in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 1966.

With degrees in chemistry, Maynard started his career as a research chemist at GAF in New York, then as a product development chemist at Crompton and Knowles in Pennsylvania. He then moved to Velsicol in Illinois before settling in 1978 in Aiken, S.C., where he worked at Sandoz, now known as Clariant, as a chemist, advancing to senior chemist. He remained there for 27 years.

In 2006, after retiring, Maynard returned to Camden. Maynard enjoyed revisiting his favorite places from the past, bowling with friends, taking daily walks downtown and feeding the ducks at the harbor.

Surviving are his brother, Carl Whitehouse and his wife, Sally, of Connecticut; his sister, Roxie Hill of Rockland; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Camden with Joan Semenuk officiating.
