CAMDEN — Marie Agnes Young Connell, 91, of Camden, passed away peacefully Nov. 3, 2013, in the hospice center at Pen Bay Medical Center. Marie was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Portland to Hazel Conant and Herbert Leighton Young. She was married for 49-1/2 years to William Bernard Connell of Everett, Mass., who passed away in 1994. They were married Aug. 9, 1944, at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden and remained lifelong Camden residents.

Surviving are her five children, Mary Louise Briggs and her husband, Brian Briggs, of Ogunquit and West Palm Beach, Fla., James Michael Connell and his wife, Annie Mahan Connell, of Pemaquid Harbor, Jeanne Marie Connell and her husband, Joseph Mahoney, of Champaign, Ill., Robert William Connell and his wife, Deborah Howard Connell, of Camden, and William David Connell and his wife, Maryanne Gallardy Connell, of Wayne, Pa.; six grandchildren, Beth Marie Briggs Gooding and her husband, Erik, of Moorhead, Minn., U.S. Army Capt. Dr. Megan Connell and her husband, Patrick Olsen, of Virginia Beach, Va., Nicholas Robert Connell of Denver, Colo., Marilyn Elinor Connell Olson and her husband, Justin, of Mount Vernon, and Morgan Marie Connell and Jenna Nicole Connell, both of Wayne, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Emma Marie, Lily Lee and Zoie Bethany Gooding, who was born on her great-grandmother's birthday, and five-week old Summer Marie Connell-Olsen, who traveled to visit her great grandmother while she was in the hospital; three nephews, Paul McFarland Jr. and his wife, Sheila, of Lincolnville, Thomas McFarland and his wife, Carol, of Tyler, Texas, and Michael McFarland and his wife, Jennifer, of Islesboro; her great-nieces, Sarah and Devon McFarland; and her great-nephews, Thomas, Paul, Peter, Sean and Max McFarland; and numerous great great-nieces and -nephews; her first cousin, Marjorie Clements Larrabee and family of Thorndike; her cousins, Dorothea Young of Camden and sons Craig and Stuart, and Bruce Young and his wife, Hattie, of Kinston, N.C.; and her childhood friends, Winnie Snow of Camden and Stephen McGrath of Daytona Beach, Fla.; her special friends, Emily Laite Taylor and her husband, Richard, of Warren, and Laurie McGrath Digalbo, daughter of Peter McGrath, and her husband, David, of Burlington, Conn.

Marie was the granddaughter of longtime area residents Lucy Colson and William Duncan Young of Lincolnville, and May Sidelinger and Walter Leslie Conant of Camden. Marie spent her early childhood in Winterport, where her father, Herbert Young, taught school. Marie and her sister, Muriel Elizabeth Young McFarland, started school in Winterport and then two years later moved to a house on Pearl Street in Camden to attend school in Camden while Herbert worked as a teacher in Mattawamkeag. When her Grandfather Conant died in 1931, the Young family moved to the family property at 67 Mechanic St., where Marie lived during her remaining childhood, resided when she was first married to Bill and returned to again in 1980 with her husband Bill in their retirement.

After graduating from Camden High School in 1940 and then from Oxford School of Business Administration in Cambridge, Mass., she worked in Boston for two years before returning to Camden. Marie then worked as a payroll clerk for Rowland Thompson's Company of New York, a subcontractor located at the Camden Shipyard during World War II. She is best known for her work as a bookkeeper for the Camden Farmers' Union for more than three decades.

Marie was a longtime member of the town of Camden’s planning board and cemetery committee, and was a former board member and supporter of Sixty Three Washington Street in Camden. She had been a volunteer at the former Camden YMCA, was an active member of the Women's Club at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, longtime secretary/treasurer of the Megunticook Watershed Association, and founder and secretary/treasurer of the Norton Pond Poland Road Fund. Marie loved children and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, William B. Connell, who died in 1994; and her sister, Muriel McFarland, who died in 2008; her brother-in-law, Paul McFarland Sr., who passed away in 1976; her father, Herbert Young, who passed away in 1979; her mother, Hazel, who passed away in 1974; her cousins Aubrey Clark Young of Camden, who passed away in 2008, and Jerome Young of Camden, who passed away in 2013; and her lifelong friend, Peter McGrath of West Hartford, Conn., who passed away in 2010.

Calling hours will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden, with the Rev. Richard Malo officiating, followed by burial in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to Cote Hall at the church for a reception following the cemetery service.
