ISLESBORO — A man who was reported to police by a concerned Islesboro resident was located without incident March 4, according to a March 6 press release from Waldo County Sheriff Lieutenant Cody E. Laite.

Around 7:40 a.m., Waldo County Regional Communications Center received a call regarding an adult male on 700 Acre Island who had caught their attention. According to the press release, the man had been given a boat ride from the Lincolnville Ferry Terminal to the island, which is just off the largest section of Islesboro, and was last seen on foot, walking into the woods. The caller reportedly stated that the man was last seen wearing a ballistic vest and was believed to be concealing at least on firearm. The press release does not make clear what led the caller to believe the man in question was concealing a firearm.

The man was ultimately located by the WSO, which was assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard, who both responded to 700 Acre Island, ultimately located the man in an outboard powered skiff, traveling near the north end of the island. When approached by members of the WSO, the man was unarmed and no ballistic vest was located, according to the press release. The man cooperated with deputies and was subsequently transported to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.

Since the incident, members of the WSO, paired with the Maine Marine Patrol traveled back to the island for further investigation, according to the report.

Lt. Laite ended the press release by stating:

“As of this writing, the incident remains under investigation and there is no concern for a threat to the public’s safety. No criminal charges are pending at this time.”
