SWANVILLE — A New York man was killed in a late-night crash that involved the building that houses Swan Lake Grocery, according to a media report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Andrew McHugh, 23, of South Bethlehem, New York, was fatally injured in the Oct. 6 crash, which was reported to police at 11:50 p.m. According to the report, McHugh was traveling north on Route 141 when he left the roadway and struck the small grocery store.

The caller reportedly told dispatchers that the vehicle was on fire and that they were not able to extricate McHugh from the truck he was operating.

Waldo County Sheriff’s Deputies Brandon Curtis and Lucas Potts responded to the scene, in addition to several fire departments, including Belfast, Searsport, and Monroe.

Once on scene, deputies determined that McHugh was deceased.

The building the vehicle crashed into, which houses Swan Lake Grocery, sustained extensive fire, water, and smoke damage as a result of the fire.

Though the investigation remains ongoing, the initial evidence indicated that speed was a primary factor in the crash, according to the media report.

Additional information will be added as it becomes available.
