BURNHAM — A Burnham man was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center after suffering life-threatening injuries during an ATV crash, according to a press release from Lieutenant Matthew C. Curtis, of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Gerald Erving, 47, was operating a 2016 Yamaha four-wheeler on Mount Road in Burnham when he struck the rear tire of a second four-wheeler being operated by his 20-year-old son, Zachary Erving, also of Burnham.

The impact of the collision reportedly caused the elder Erving to be ejected over the handlebars of his ATV and onto Mount Road. Neither he nor his son were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The crash was reported to Waldo County Regional Communications around 6:30 p.m. May 4,  according to the release.

Gerald Erving was transported to Sebasticook Hospital in Pittsfield, then taken by LifeFlight to EMMC in Bangor.

Zachary Erving, who was uninjured during the collision, was operating a 2019 Can-AM ATV at the time of the incident.

According to the release, speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors.

The crash remains under investigation, with Corporal Darrin Moody, of the WCSO, as the primary investigator.

Assistance at the scene was provided by Clinton Police, Sebasticook and Unity Ambulance Services, and the Burnham Fire Department.
