Maland Nowland, obituary
ROCKLAND — Maland C. Nowland of Rockland, formerly of East Vassalboro, passed away peacefully at home in Rockland Sept. 20, 2013, at age 92. He was a devoted father, grandfather and husband of 63 years to his late wife, Barbara (Kinney) Nowland.
Maland was born in Windsor Nov. 25, 1920, to Arthur and Ethel Cummings Nowland. Through his teen years he lived in Windsor and China, graduating from Erskine Academy in South China in 1939.
He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was assigned to reconnaissance in the 30th "Old Hickory" Infantry Division. The 30th landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, June 11, 1944. He was awarded the Bronze, Silver Star and Purple Heart medals for his combat service.
Maland married Barbara L. Kinney Feb. 12, 1949. Together they lived in Rhode Island while Maland attended Bryant College before moving back to Maine. He was an accountant for Scott Paper in Winslow until his retirement in 1983. They attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Waterville and St. Mark's in Augusta.
Maland enjoyed summers at camp surrounded by family. He was an avid reader throughout his life. He frequented the Vassalboro Public Library and was often seen with a book; he read two or three mysteries or westerns every week through retirement. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking meals and playing golf. Maland and Barbara spent a number of winters in Arizona visiting their daughter, Stacey.
Maland is remembered for his quiet, friendly way. He had a mind for facts and figures, and was often asked by family members to recall a fact or birth date; and after a moment, he never failed to recall a birthday or put an age to a family member or friend. He expressed few complaints, and had very few vices. When doctors asked Maland if he drank or smoked, he would report he once had a puff on a cigarette in the service in the 1940s.
Maland was steadfast in his care and devotion to his wife through her struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Barbara passed away eight months before Maland.
Maland is also predeceased by his son, Stephen K. Nowland; his sisters, Virginia Nowland and Phyllis Cunningham; his brothers Dean, C. Frederick and Everett Nowland. He is survived by his sister, Alberta "Bunny" Craig of South China; his daughter, Stacey A. O'Connor and son-in-law Dan of Rockland; and a grandson, Jacob S. O'Connor of Rockland.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice, and Spectrum Generations Bridges Home Care. In honor of Maland's wishes, there is no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vassalboro Public Library at PO Box 62, East Vassalboro, ME 04935.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland. To share a memory or condolence with Maland's family, visit his Book of Memories online at the funeral home.
