Magnus Richardson Lane, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Magnus Richardson Lane passed away on October 26, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer on Vinalhaven, Maine. He was born on December 6, 1955, in Keflavik, Iceland, to Johanna Magnusdottir and Thomas Lane.
Magnus is survived by his children, Eirika Benny Magnusdottir and her husband Steingrimur Sigurosson, and Pall Mar Magnusson and wife Dora Hauksdóttir, all of Iceland; his brother, Stephen Lane and his partner Lori Storer, of New Hampshire; his sisters, Helga Tomasdottir and Sigridur Benediktsdottir and her husband Einar Thor Einarsson, of Iceland; his uncle, Thor Magnusson of Iceland; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by special friends Dana Blackington and Hailey Wentworth.
Magnus spent much of his life between Iceland and Maine. He began fishing in the waters off Grundarfjordur, Iceland, before moving to Vinalhaven in 1981, where he made his living on the ocean.
For more than four decades, he fished for herring, groundfish, and lobster, working the water year after year in all kinds of weather. The ocean guided the course of his life and remained his constant connection wherever he lived.
He had a lifelong interest in hunting and often shared stories from his time in the woods. His favorite story to tell was the moose hunt he shared with his son, Palli.
Known for his dry humor, he was always up for a good feed and the company that came with it, often saying, "Lobsters pay for it all with their lives."
Magnus continued lobstering until just weeks before his passing.
He enjoyed lively debate, his Maine Coon cats, the New England Patriots, and music, especially Pink Floyd.
As he wished, there will be no formal service or celebration of life.
