Western Class D Girls: #9 Vinalhaven 45, #1 Pine Tree Academy 43 [FINAL]
Vinalhaven girls pull off stunning upset victory
At Augusta, freshman Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes led a huge fourth quarter comeback to capture the win.
The Vikings were looking defeat right in the eye at the Augusta Civic Center Tuesday morning trailing 40-26 heading into the fourth quarter it looked like with a 14 point lead and over 30 Vinalhaven turnovers through three quarters of play, to be a cake walk for the Breakers.
However the Vikings claimed on the back of Davis-Oakes, a freshmen who scored 15 points along with some outstanding rebounding and a couple of steals to lead the comeback.
And while Davis-Oakes was busy scoring points, the rest of the team piked up the defensive side of the ball holding the Breakers to just three points in the final stanza to turnaround the 14 point deficit for the win.
Pine Tree Academy led 14-9 after the first quarter and 26-20 at the halftime break. By the end of the third quarter they had a 14-point lead, 40-26, but the Viking girls were not done playing as they outscored the Breakers 19-3 in the fourth quarter for the miraculous come from behind win.
After a close first quarter, Pine Tree scored closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run off steals for the 14-9 lead. Vinalhaven stayed in the game in the second quarter living off the full line where they went 9-of-10 to keep it to a four point disadvantage.
Pine Tree’s Alex Goodman, a freshman, poured in 10 points in the third quarter to led the Breakers to a 14-6 quarter score and a 14 point lead heading into the fourth.
Vinalhaven went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter to cut the score to 40-37 with 3:37 left in the game. With 1:05 left on the clock the Davis-Oakes went to the line and made both shots to give the Vikings only their second lead of the game, they scored first in the game. On the ensuing inbounds play before the clock even started, Vinalhaven was called for a foul. Goodman went to the line and made the first of a one and one to tie the score at 43-43. With Vinalhaven with the ball Davis-Oakes was fouled on a nice move under the basket for two shots with :39.8 seconds left in regulation. She made them both giving the Vikings the 45-43 lead. The Breakers had three shots in the final seconds and as had been the case the entire fourth quarter they could not put the ball in the hoop giving the Vikings the win.
Scoring for the Vikings were Davis-Oakes 24 points; Paige Dennison 13; Deja Doughty and Taylor Littlefield four each.
Vinalhaven was 16-of-21 (76 percent) from the foul line and had one 3-pointer from Dennison.

Eastern Class B Boys: #2 Winslow 46, #7 Oceanside 40 [FINAL]
Oceanside falls to Winslow in quarterfinal action
At Bangor, the contest between No. 2 Winslow and No. 7 Oceanside Saturday morning at the Bangor Cross Insurance Center proved to be a very competitive one as both teams kept the score well within reach until the end with Winslow capturing the 46-40 win.
The Mariner season came to a close at the hands of No. 2 Winslow in an exciting game that was changed by a call from an official that you would probably never see in the regular season, but was made with very little time left on the clock as the Mariners were battling back and had closed the gap to two points 42-40.
The Mariners made a great comeback attempt in the final minutes of the game until they had to start fouling. Nate Raye started the comeback with a steal and finished it with a 3-pointer. In the next trip down the floor, Raye drove hard to the basket for a layup and Nick Mazurek then tied the score at 40-40 with 1:35 left in the fourth quarter.
With 19.6 seconds to go in the game, Mazurek was called for an intentional foul when he plainly went for the ball. That changed the momentum of the game as Winslow made both foul shots and got the ball back to put the game away.
An intentional foul is called when you purposely commit a foul and are not trying to go for the ball. If you are going for the ball the intentional is not called because the losing team has to stop the clock, give up the foul shot and hope the opponent misses it. The intentional is a technical foul, gives the opponent two foul shots and the ball out of bounds making it a possible four or five point action.
The Mariners took an 11-8 lead as the buzzer rang to end the first quarter, but Winslow had a 20-18 advantage at the halftime buzzer. At the end of the third quarter, Winslow was ahead 35-23.
Scoring for the Mariners were Keenan Hendricks with 12 points; Raye and Mazurek seven each; Riley Sprague four; Eli Thorbjornson and Walker Ranney three each; and Zach Peaco and Jarrod Leonardi two each.
Oceanside was 10-of-12 (83 percent) from the foul line and they drained six 3-pointers, two from Hendricks and one each from, Thorbjornson, Raye, Ranney, and Mazurek.
For Winslow, Colby Robertson had a game high 20 points; Justin Martin 11; Josh Kervin seven; Trenton Bouchard three; Dylan Hutchinson and Justin Burgher two each; and Keanu Earle one.
The Black Raiders were 12-of-27 (44 percent) from the foul line and they had six 3-pointers as well, five from Robertson and one from Martin.
No. 2 Winslow advances to play #3 Old Town Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:05 p.m. at the Bangor Cross Insurance Center.

Eastern Class B Girls: #4 Camden Hills 49, #5 Oceanside 45 [FINAL]
Camden Hills holds off a determined Oceanside
At Bangor, they say defeating a team three times in season is very difficult, and it was, but the hungry Windjammers did just that Saturday with their third win of the season over rival Oceanside, this one being the important one, the Eastern Class B quarterfinal.
The 49-45 win was hard fought and it took a very mentally tough team today to defeat the Mariners who were determined this was their game to win.
“Beating a team three times is difficult and I really felt this was more of a mental challenge for us than anything,” said Camden Hills coach Meg Cressler. “We played to our strengths today and it was ours to loose. The focus that we have had over the past few days left little doubt that we wouldn't be able to take care of business today.”
One of the keys to the Windjammer win had to be the play of freshman Laticia Billings, who stepped up her game today when she was asked to fill in for the Windjammers’ arguably best defender, senior Hannah Wincklhofer who is away on a class trip. Billings not only took care of business defensively, but offered some key offensive baskets as well.
“We knew that once Hannah left we would need a strong defense presence to balance out our rotation,” said Cressler. “Laticia has show that she can fill that role in the regular season even though she hasn't gotten a whole lot of varsity minutes. Today she really stepped up and competed at a higher level. She's a tough kid and we were confident that she would be able to help us on both ends of the floor.”
Camden Hills led after each quarter, 10-8, 26-20 and 36-38 heading into the final stanza where Oceanside’s Kalyn Grover almost singlehandedly brought the Mariners back into the game. Grover scored the first four points of the fourth quarter going 4-of-6 from the foul line and a three point play from Emily Gould helped the Mariners tie the score at 40-40 with 3:11 left in the game.
Grover and Gould did all they could to keep the game close enough to win, but ultimately fell short as the Windjammer defense and 3-of-4 foul shooting at the end from Charlotte Messer sealed the deal for Camden Hills.
“Very proud of this team especially of their execution,” said Cressler. “Today we played probably the best four quarters that we have played this year. Hopefully, we just continue to get better and execute our plan against Gardiner.”
Scoring for Camden Hills were Messer with 16 points; Rachel Pease 12; Maddie Bowman 10; Billings four; Mara Dostie three; and Eliza Boetsch and Kira Barley two each.
Camden Hills was 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the foul line and had one 3-pointer from Dostie.
For Oceanside, Kalyn Grover led the Mariners with 14 points; Makenna Brooks 11; Emily Gould eight; Payton Billingsley five; Ashley Gardner three; and Alexis Davis and Jillian Brooks two each.
The Mariners were 16-of-19 (84 percent) from the foul line and had two 3-pointers, one each from Gardner and Billingsley.
Camden Hills will face Gardner Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 3:35 p.m. in an Eastern Class B regional semifinal matchup at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Eastern Class B Boys: #1 Medomak Valley 60, #8 Maine Central Institute 39 [FINAL]
The top-seeded Medomak Valley Panthers wasted no time in its late Saturday afternoon duel with eighth seed Maine Central Institute and played very aggressively against the Huskies from very early on in the game.
When the final buzzer rang at the Bangor Cross Insurance Center, the Panthers were happily celebrating yet another victory, this time a 60-39 victory.
Medomak Valley opened up the game by going 4-for-4 from the field and had a 10-5 advantage with 5:23 to go in the opening period, and later took a 17-13 lead after the first.
In the second quarter, the Panthers worked hard to distance themselves from the Huskies, and distance themselves they did.
Medomak Valley quickly jumped out to a 28-16 advantage with 5:05 to go in the half and was shooting 10-of-17 on the floor.
At the halftime break, Nick DePatsy had 12 points in the second quarter alone (16 in the first half) and his Panthers were ahead 35-18.
In the third period, the Huskies at one point came within 12 points, but failed to score in the final 4:42 of the quarter and watched as Medomak Valley took a 46-29 lead into the final quarter.
In the final period, the Panthers continued to score points and ultimately won the game 60-39.
Nick DePatsy finished the game with 30 points for the Panthers.
