VINALHAVEN — Laura A. Hamilton, 60, beloved wife of Bruce R. Young, died unexpectedly at her home June 2, 2013.

Born in North Attleboro, Mass., Aug. 6, 1952, she was the daughter of Stephen Kavanaugh and Olga T. Morganti Hamilton. Growing up in Massachusetts, Laura attended Hamilton Country Day School and was a graduate of that school's high school. She later earned her degree as a registered nurse from Massasoit Community College.

For several years Laura worked raising and training sulky horses. At one time they kept 60 horses at their stables.

Having summered in Vinalhaven several years, Laura moved there permanently in 1984. For a few years, she owned and operated The Sand Dollar Restaurant.

Dec. 24, 1988, Laura married Bruce R. Young in Vinalhaven.

Laura later lobstered with her husband, and more recently helped him in the management of his construction business. Bruce said that his wife was a woman of many talents and could accomplish anything she attempted.

For the past year, she served as a member of the Vinalhaven Planning Board.

Laura and Bruce considered their harlequin Great Dane, Prudence, as if it were a child.

Other than her husband, Laura is survived by her mother; her sister, Elizabeth Simons and her husband, Robert, of all South Carolina; as well as one nephew, Robert Simons Jr. of Indianapolis.

A graveside service at Seaview Cemetery on Waldo Avenue in Rockland will be announced in August.
