SOUTH THOMASTON — Jayne Susanne Cushman, 64, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2021, surrounded by her loved ones after a five-year battle with frontal temporal dementia.

Jayne was born in Rockland on July 4, 1957, to Jeanie and Edward Billings. As a child Jayne loved spending time on her father’s ground fishing boat. From a young age, she especially enjoyed caring for her horses. Over the years, she won many trophies and ribbons for barrel racing and showing horses. She had an enormous love for all animals and was very much a “farm girl.”

She graduated from Rockland District High School, Class of 1975. After graduating, she waitressed at several local restaurants where she met her life-long friend, Francesca “Muffi” Thorn.

Jayne met the love of her life, Jeffrey Cushman through dear friends, Andy and Cindy Harris, after being set up on a blind date. The couple were married on September 11, 1983. They built a loving home and raised three children together: Kara, Nathaniel, and Jeanie.

For over 28 years, Jayne worked as a bank teller at Camden National Bank, where she made close friendships with coworkers. Jayne enjoyed working at CNB and was loved by many customers in the community.

Jayne shared many interests with family and friends. Jayne and Jeff particularly enjoyed motorcycle riding with their best friends, Marty and Cindy Gammon, and especially their trips to Prince Edward Island. She traveled often to Stonington to visit her “second” mother, Glenna Aldrich.

Jayne spent many years clogging with her daughters at Steppin’ Out School of Dance, where she performed at local fairs and events. She loved gardening and growing herbs and was known for her green thumb. Jayne had a talent for sewing, making many beautiful dresses and costumes for family members. She was also an excellent marksman with target practicing, and the family used to call her “Annie Oakley” for her sharp eyes and quick shooting.

Jayne is survived by her loving family: her husband of 38 years, Jeffrey Cushman; her children, Kara Cushman George and her husband Jeremy George, Nathaniel Cushman and his wife Michelle Cushman, Jeanie Cushman and her partner Kevin Glover; her four grandchildren: Logan, Kaileigh, Liam, and Colton; her sisters: Ellen Fales and her husband Jeffery Fales, Afton Stenger and her husband Rocky Stenger as well as many nieces and nephews.

An informal Celebration of Life for Jayne will be held Friday, August 6, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. To share a memory or story with Jayne’s family, please visit their online Book of Memories at www.bchfh.com
