James R. Moody, obituary
APPLETON — James Russell Moody, 77, of Appleton, died Oct. 31, 2013, at his home in Appleton surrounded by his family. Born in Camden Feb. 27, 1936, he was the son of Jay H. and Izora May (Batchelder) Moody and was a Camden High School graduate, Class of 1954. He married Arlene Charlotte Grey on April 11, 1956, in Camden-Rockport.
Jim's early employment included with the public works department for the town of Camden, where he was director foreman. He also worked for his brother, Dick Moody, at Sea View Esso Station in Camden, and at the age of 25 went to work for Lester Gross, which later became L.O. Gross & Son, where he worked for many years.
He was a member of the Camden Fire Department from 1958 to 1976 and was a long-time member and supporter of the Knox County Fish & Game Association. Jim's hobbies included hunting, fishing and helping his family, neighbors, and friends with any projects that needed an extra hand. Jim was especially pleased when one of his boys would ask for his advice on their projects. He was always willing to spend time helping the Boy Scouts learn new skills. The most recent family project was building a ramp so Jim could realize his goal of returning home. He had a natural mechanical and building ability from a young age and built his home in Appleton in 1986, several 14-foot wood runabout boats, furniture and hunting knives. For the past four years he has been a very devoted caregiver for his beloved wife, Arlene.
Surviving is his wife, Arlene Grey Moody of Appleton; four sons, David Moody and his wife, Paula, of Rockport, Wayne Moody and his wife, Amy, of Warren, Larry Moody and his wife, Anissa, of Montville, and Kevin Moody of Appleton; 11 grandchildren, Kate Marchessault and her husband, David, of Thomaston, Brian Moody of Hope, Crista Moody of Waldoboro, Amanda Poland of Cushing, Janelle Blake of Union, Kyle Moody, Brandon Moody and his wife, Allison, all of Appleton, Casey Gammon of Warren, Tobey Moody of Hope, Josh Moody of Westbrook and Erik Moody of Auburn; 14 great-grandchildren, Brady and Alayna Marchessault of Thomaston, Mason Moody, Sydney and Ethan Moody, all of Hope, Blane and Dylan Poland of Cushing, Alli Marie Moody and Brooklyn Moody, both of Appleton, Joshua and Julianna Blake of Union, Ryder Gammon of Warren, and Eli and Cayden Moody of Auburn. He is also survived by a brother, Philip Moody of South Hope; two sisters-in-law, Judy Dinsmore of Camden and Thelma Dean and her husband, Cary, of Palermo; and several nieces and nephews, including Janet Bennett and her husband, Ronnie, who were their neighbors when they lived in Camden.
Jim was predeceased by a brother, Richard Moody and his wife, Ruby; and a sister, Rose Payson and her husband, Lew.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. A graveside service will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. at LaSalle Cemetery in Searsmont, with the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating.
