James H. York, Sr., obituary

BELFAST — James Henry York, Sr., 79, husband of Betty (Stone) York, died on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Windward Gardens in Camden. Born in Belfast on August 20, 1944, he was the son of Robert H. and Colleen (Nickerson) York. A 1962 graduate of Searsport High School, he married Betty Stone on March 27, 1964.

Jim’s professional career included 32 years at Champion International Corporation, with 17 of those years working as a construction safety manager in Texas, New York, Alabama and North Carolina. In addition, he worked in safety for several local companies including FruCon, Sullivan & Merritt, H.E. Sargent and Cianbro. He also worked five years for the State of Maine Dept. of Transportation, retiring in 2006.

A member of the Belfast United Methodist Church, Jim also was a past charter member and former president of the Searsport Historical Society; past member and president of the Community Benefit Club; scout master of Boy Scout Troop #215 of Searsport; 50 year member of Pownel Lodge #118 A.F. & A.M. in Stockton Springs; 25 year member of the American Society of Safety Engineers; 12 year member of the Searsport Fire Department, a founding father and 12 year member of Searsport Ambulance Service, where he also served as director for 7 years; former member of Bucksport Regional Health Center board of directors, member of the National and Maine Safety Councils. An Emergency Medical Technician, Jim also taught Advanced First Aid and CPR for the American Red Cross and American Heart Association to local fire departments, ambulance squads and through the Searsport Adult Ed program.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Betty York; children, Patricia Parker and husband Randy of Swanville, Lisa Kelley and fiancé Craig Sturtevant of Leeds, and James York Jr. of Frankfort; grandchildren, Cassie Parker and friend Jay of Thomaston, Maegan Moulton and husband Tony of Bangor, Zachary Gott of Bangor, Kristina Kelley and friend Andrew of Albany, Oregon, Jaymie-Lynn York of Prospect, Christine Mailman and husband Emmett of Cliffton, Texas, and Brandi Kazarian of Thorndike; great-grandchildren, Ethan Higgins of Thomaston, Sierra Brown, Tyler and Owen Moulton all of Bangor, Alister and Lilyen Mailman of Cliffton, Texas, and several cousins.

There will be a Memorial Service held Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 2 p.m., at the Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast.
