Jacqueline Mary Freitas, obituary
FRIENDSHIP — Jacqueline Mary Freitas was born to Joseph Freitas and Helen Gichun Freitas on May 17, 1948, in Woburn, Massachusetts. She passed away on June 11, 2026, at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine.
In 2024, she was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma of her bile duct. Cholangiocarcinoma is an inoperable cancer. Most people are given six months to a year survival, Jackie fought for another six months past that.
Jackie grew up in North Woburn. She attended the Linscott-Rumford schools and Woburn Highschool, graduating in 1966. She went on to college and for many years worked for MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts. She often traveled around the United States for her work. She was an excellent researcher and a prolific writer.
Jackie wrote many stories and plays always focusing on being kind to each other, animals, birds, and the earth. She has always been an advocate for child welfare and animal rights. She never gave up.
She lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts for many years. During her years there she worked with AIDS patients at the Provincetown AIDS Support Group physically supporting clients and driving them to medical appointments in Boston hospitals. She also worked at the Provincetown Magazine and the Provincetown Art Association.
Jackie was a promoter of women’s sports. She played softball and coached women’s teams in Burlington, Massachusetts for many years.
From Provincetown, she moved to Friendship, Maine in 2006. She continued her advocacy for animals, spending countless hours at the Pope Memorial Animal Shelter, in Thomaston, Maine, walking dogs and cat sitting. During her time in Maine, she made many friends. She regularly visited a local farm where endangered breeds of donkeys, sheep and goats were bred to keep their breeds alive. She really enjoyed when the babies were born. She supported the Peace Ridge Sanctuary in Brooks, Maine.
There is so much more of Jackie’s life that we will all remember.
Jackie is survived by her brothers and sisters: Walter, Joseph, Suzanne, Mary Carol, Edward, and Michael; and sisters-in-law Barbara, Jane, and Roberta.
She is predeceased by her sister-in-law Charlotte (Walter).
Jackie will live on in our hearts forever. She leaves her energy for us to carry on.
